Holistic and Complementary Care for Cancer Course

For anyone facing cancer, caring for someone with cancer, working to prevent cancer or to sustain good health after cancer.

I was inspired to create this course when I immersed myself in extensive research following my own cancer diagnosis. To save myself from the overwhelming uncertainties, I turned my attention to understanding how my knowledge could help me, and searching for more. What I discovered was so eye-opening that I gradually realized I had to find a way to share it. The more I learned, the more I saw there is a whole world of information that is essential for people with cancer, and yet very few are aware of it. So investigating, evaluating, and synthesizing the wide world of holistic options became practically a full-time job for many months—for my own sake, for my children’s sake, and for your sake.

Cancer is dreaded and seen as mysterious, hopelessly complicated, an inescapable enemy. Yet there is a vast body of research, much which is surprisingly optimistic. Many effective, well-studied supportive therapies are available, and day-to-day choices play a far bigger role than we’ve been led to believe.

There is so much we can do for ourselves or for our loved ones… to make conventional treatment less damaging. To encourage faster and more complete recovery. To confidently make our own decisions about how we wish to proceed. To prevent cancer from starting, or keep recurrence at bay. To live with hope, not just fear.

The word “holistic” is everywhere these days. But holistic does not mean simply substituting one kind of medicine for another. What you will learn in this course is a truly wholistic way of thinking about, and actively undertaking, movement through illness toward health.

Every approach covered in this course is based on reputable research. The course is not a method or a protocol. It is an introduction to a very wide variety of health-promoting strategies, so that you can design your own self care, or choose a suitable practitioner to help you, no matter how much or little conventional treatment you decide to use. Resources, references, and suggested further reading are included. There are suggested activities and optional deep-dive features for those who want to pursue related topics.

The estimated time to complete the course is six to eight weeks, but the pace is completely up to you.

I am not a medical doctor and this course does not contain medical advice.

Does complementary care really make a difference?

On a beautiful autumn day, I drove through the fields and woodlands of Atlantic Canada to my follow-up appointment. That afternoon my doctor told me, with a smile of genuine delight I will never forget, that I had reached the prize: “no evidence of disease.” I had diminished the size of my tumor before my surgery, with no medical treatment, and doctors and nurses were astonished at my rapid healing.

That same day, 2000 miles away in Tennessee, my brother Paul died after three years of agonizing failed cancer treatments. He was offered no complementary care, and he and his wife did not choose to explore holistic options or lifestyle changes.

Nature offers us support and protection in so many ways. Our time in this life will be better, and very likely longer, if we become willing, fully engaged learners and participants in the healing process.

I believe anyone facing serious illness should be informed about the great variety of scientifically verified, humane, effective, safe, sustainable options which millions access around the world but which are almost completely absent in North America.

I am going to spread the word as much as I can. I hope you will too.
